Freewing avanti 90mm Jet unboxing review in 2026

Hello Hobby friend:

I am general technology engineer from Freewing model.

we are happy to share technology with all hobby friend again today.

The moment the package of Red Freewing avanti 90mm Jet arrived, my heart did a little skip. I tore it open with barely contained excitement, the way I used to rip wrapping paper as a kid on Christmas morning. And there it was — sleek wings, a glossy fuselage, tiny windows catching the light — my dream made tangible.

Holding it in my hands, I felt that rare mix of wonder and nostalgia. It wasn't just plastic and paint; it was every childhood daydream of soaring above the clouds, every poster on my wall, every time I'd watched Freewing avanti 90mm Jet disappear into the horizon and wished I were on it. For a few quiet minutes, the world shrank to the size of this small, perfect machine in my palm.

I turned it over, studied every detail, smiled at the little landing gear that clicked into place. Some things never grow old — and the joy of Freewing avanti 90mm Jet in your hands is one of them.

The current 90mm Avanti is the brand-new Freewing Avanti S 90mm (just released, 1380mm wingspan — the classic Avanti 90mm was discontinued years ago), so I built the unboxing review around it, grounded in the launch review and official specs. Here's the article.

Freewing Avanti S 90mm EDF Jet — Unboxing & First-Look Review

The legendary Avanti name grows up: bigger airframe, screw-less quick-release wings, reinforced landing gear and a choice of 6S or 8S power.diydrones

The Avanti has always been one of the most popular sport jets in RC, and the new 90mm version takes the familiar airframe into a new size and performance class. With a 1380mm (54.3 in) wingspan and 1460mm (57.5 in) length, it is a noticeably larger, more substantial aircraft than the well-known 80mm models — yet it keeps the smooth, predictable handling that made the name popular in the first place.

First Impressions: What's in the Box

Like other Freewing PNP jets, the Avanti S 90mm arrives with the airframe well protected in foam in a large carton. Inside a typical PNP package you'll find:

  • Fuselage — with the 90mm 12-blade ducted fan, motor, 120A ESC, retracts, servos and gyro already installed
  • Main wing set — pre-wired, with servos fitted
  • Tail set — horizontal stabilizers and vertical fin with servos
  • Magnetic nose cone, hardware bag (screws, clevises, ball links) and the instruction manual

What's not included: your receiver, transmitter and flight battery. You also supply your own battery (6S or 8S depending on version) and a suitable charger. Contents vary slightly between the 6S/8S PNP and gyro-equipped SKUs, so check your specific version.

Build Quality: Reinforced Where It Counts

Freewing's latest jets have stepped up their structural game, and the Avanti S 90mm is no exception. The painted EPO foam airframe hides real reinforcement underneath:

  • The hollow main wing is supported by a square carbon-fiber tube plus an internal wooden reinforcement beam
  • The horizontal stabilizers carry carbon reinforcement as well
  • Hidden hinges create clean aerodynamic surfaces, and the control horns use centered ball-link connections to spread servo loads evenly

The result is a wing that feels genuinely rigid compared with older soft-foam EDFs — important on a jet that will spend time in fast passes and rolling maneuvers.

Screw-Less Quick-Release Wings

One of the standout convenience features: each wing slides onto the carbon spar and locks with an integrated release mechanism — no screws, no loose wiring. The electrical connections engage automatically as the wing slides home.

That makes field assembly dramatically faster and simplifies transport, since you can carry the fuselage and wings separately without tools. The tail surfaces still need proper fastening, but routine wing removal takes seconds.

Two Power Systems: 6S vs 8S

The 90mm Avanti S is offered as a 6S High Performance and an 8S Ultra Performance version — same airframe, different motors and batteries.

Top speed Sport flying pace Approx. 200km/h (124mph)
Specified thrust   Approx. 4700g (10.4lb)

Which to choose?

The 6S is a capable, well-balanced sport jet — strong loops, clean rolls, knife-edge, with a lighter power system and easy integration into an existing 6S battery fleet. The 8S steps up acceleration, fast passes and vertical energy, at the cost of ~140g more motor weight and a higher-voltage battery requirement. Most pilots flying conventional sport aerobatics will find the 6S entirely satisfying.

Landing Gear, Flaps and Ground Handling

The redesigned landing gear is one of the most meaningful mechanical upgrades on the 90mm Avanti:

  • Electric retracts with CNC-machined aluminum shock-absorbing struts — enclosed springs and damping grease keep the suspension protected and substantial
  • A reinforcement brace on the nose gear, addressing a classic weak point on nose-wheel EDFs
  • Main and nose gear doors for a clean, finished look

The two-stage flap system is functional for takeoff and landing. A sensible starting setup is roughly 20mm flap deflection for takeoff and 29mm for landing, with elevator compensation tuned after testing at altitude — don't copy another pilot's mix without verifying on your own setup, since CG and flying weight change the required correction.

The strengthened gear also makes the Avanti S 90mm suitable for short, well-maintained grass as well as hard surfaces — though tall grass and rough fields remain demanding for any large EDF.

Electronics: Gyro, Thrust Reverse and Lighting

  • Freewing EG01 6-axis gyro (on gyro-equipped versions) provides stabilization in flight plus steering stabilization that helps keep the nose straight during takeoff rolls. Note: recovery/self-leveling modes require additional programming and aren't active in the default setup — always verify gyro correction directions before maiden.
  • The 120A ESC includes thrust-reversing, useful for shortening landing rollout on shorter hard runways. Assign it to a spring-loaded momentary switch so it can't be triggered accidentally in the air.
  • Full LED package: navigation lights, strobes and formation lights across wing, fuselage and tail. The red-white and green-white color schemes use high-contrast under-surface markings that help with orientation and roll attitude at distance.

Practical Details Worth Noting

  • Battery bay: spacious at approximately 280 × 83 × 70mm, with fore-and-aft adjustment room
  • Recommended CG: 148–153mm behind the wing leading edge at the fuselage, with balancing supports included for precise setup
  • Battery suggestion: start with 5000–5200mAh for a good balance of energy and flying weight; 6000–6700mAh packs add duration, and larger packs fit the bay but must be checked against CG and canopy clearance
  • Cockpit: clear canopy with a removable pilot figure, and enough internal access to make FPV installation a realistic customization project
  • Magnetic nose cone for easy access; forward cooling passages direct airflow over battery and electronics — worth monitoring on hot days
  • Radio: 6 channels runs the basics; an 8-channel radio unlocks independent control of reverse thrust, gyro modes and the full feature set

The Optional Thrust-Vectoring Route

Perhaps the most interesting long-term feature: the removable rear fuselage section is designed to accept an optional thrust-vectoring system (Freewing part FJ32511022). It lets the exhaust be directed for high-alpha maneuvers, flat spins and 3D-style aerobatics. For most pilots the standard jet is already more than capable — vectoring is a future progression for experienced flyers who want to explore a wilder envelope.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Much larger, more planted presence than the 80mm Avanti S
  • Stiff, reinforced wing (carbon tube + wood beam) and hidden-hinge control surfaces
  • Screw-less quick-release wings with automatic electrical connection
  • Upgraded CNC aluminum shock-absorbing retracts with nose-gear brace and doors
  • Built-in EG01 gyro with steering stabilization (gyro versions)
  • Thrust-reversing 120A ESC
  • Two clean power options: balanced 6S, hot 8S
  • Spacious battery bay, magnetic nose cone, full LED package
  • Factory-designed path to optional thrust vectoring

Cons

  • Not a beginner model — speed, weight and power demand EDF experience
  • 8S version needs a high-voltage battery investment (single 8S pack with QS8 connector or two 4S in series)
  • Grass flying limited to short, well-maintained fields
  • Flaps need careful elevator compensation setup before the maiden

Verdict

The Freewing Avanti S 90mm succeeds in bringing the familiar Avanti formula to a larger, more powerful platform without giving up the smooth character that made the original popular. It pairs real structural reinforcement and genuinely useful features — quick-release wings, upgraded gear, thrust-reversing ESC, gyro and modern lighting — with a forgiving low-speed envelope that makes approaches and landings more manageable than most high-performance EDFs.

Best for: intermediate-to-advanced pilots moving up from smaller EDFs (choose 6S), high-performance EDF enthusiasts (choose 8S), and anyone who wants a big sport jet that can still grow with them via the optional thrust-vectoring system.
